Beth is a resident of Jacksonville, AL, originally from Rome, GA, where she is a student at Jacksonville State University. She is pursuing a degree in Music Education. She has marched with various ensembles including Spirit of Atlanta Drum and Bugle Corps, Pacific Crest Drum and Bugle Corps, Atlanta Quest indoor percussion ensemble, JSU Center stage winter guard, Berry College Independent winter guard, JSU Marching Southerners color guard. She has had many leadership positions in these ensembles. She is very excited to join the Southwind Drum and Bugle Corps staff for the 2017 season.
Chris marched with the JSU Marching Southerners, Teal Sound Drum & Bugle Corps and Madison Scouts Drum & Bugle Corps on contra bass. He is a former instructor for the JSU Marching Southerners and former member of the Music City Drum and Bugle Corps visual staff. Currently, he is a music and visual instructor for the York High School Marching Band in Yorktown, VA. This is his first season with Southwind.
Donavan, from Lucedale, MS, is a student at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. He plans to attend the University of South Alabama next fall. Donavan was a member of Southwind Drum & Bugle Corps in 2015 and 2016, where he marched trumpet. He is very excited to be joining the Southwind Drum & Bugle Corps staff for their 2017 season.
Greg is a resident of Mobile, AL where he is a student at the University of South Alabama pursuing a degree in Music Education. He is a former member of Spirit of Atlanta Drum & Bugle Corps in 2012 and Carolina Crown Drum & Bugle Corps in 2016. This is Greg's first season on the visual staff of Southwind.
Brooke Armstrong is a student at Mississippi State University pursuing a Bachelor's Degree of Music of Education in Instrumental Music. Brooke is a brass and woodwind instructor for several schools in Mississippi. Previously, she was a marching member for Forte Drum and Bugle Corps in 2011 and Spirit of Atlanta Drum and Bugle Corps from 2012-13. She is joing Southwind for her second season as a visual technician.
Jesse Albert, born and raised in Thibodaux, Louisiana, is currently pursuing a Bachelor of the Arts Degree in Instrumental Music Education K-12 at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette. As a student and performer, Jesse currently serves as the trumpet section leader for the Pride of Acadiana Marching Band, a member of the UL Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, and Trumpet Studio Ensemble, and a School of Music Staff Member and Organizer. While pursuing his degree, he has served as the High Brass and Visual Technician for the Erath High School Marching Band for the past two years as well as a consultant and clinician for bands across south Louisiana and south Texas. Jesse has had the pleasure of spending three years marching World Class Drum Corps with the 2014 and 2015 Troopers Drum and Bugle Corps and the 2016 Blue Knights Drum and Bugle Corps. Jesse will also be spending the 2017 WGI Winds season with Crossmen Independent World Indoor Winds as a mellophone player. He is thrilled and honored to be spending the 2017 season with Southwind.
Cullen holds a Bachelor's of Instrumental Music Education from the University of Southern Mississippi where he was a marching member of the Pride of Mississippi Marching Band, 5 Cents Undergraduate Brass Quintet, horn choir, and concert bands. He works as a visual/music technician for Hancock High School, Denham Springs High School, and South Choctaw High School and is a teacher for Riptide Indoor Percusion Ensemble. He marched with the Cavaliers Drum & Bugle Corps from 2013 to 2015. This is Cullen's first season with Southwind.
DJ is from Olive Branch, MS where he is an assistant director of bands for Olive Branch High School. He holds a Bachelor's of Music in Music Education from the University of Mississippi with an emphasis in trombone. DJ is joining Southwind for a second year as a visual technician.
David Housh, a resident of Slidell, Louisiana, has been reappointed the visual caption head for Southwind Drum and Bugle Corps for the 2017 season. David has a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a minor in music from the University of Mississippi. During his time at the University of Mississippi, he marched with the Ole Miss Pride of the South Marching Band and played with the Ole Miss Symphonic Band. Before attending the University of Mississippi, he attended Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College where he performed with the marching band, jazz band, symphonic band, and indoor percussion ensemble. His drum corps career began when he played mellophone for Teal Sound in 2010-2011 and later for the Blue Knights in 2012. Growing up in Nashville, TN, Nate Hughes currently resides in Clarksville, TN where he is a member of the music education program at Austin Peay State University, with trumpet as his primary instrument. His performance experience in the pageantry arts include being a member of the 2014 Cavaliers Drum & Bugle Corps, and cast member of Rhythm X Winds in 2016. As a teacher, Nate has been on the visual staff of multiple high schools in middle Tennessee. As the visual caption head at Goodpasture Christian School where he has taught since 2011, the Marching Cougars have gone on to be BOA regional champions and the 2016 Division 1 State Champion. Nate has also taught with Fred J Miller Inc. during their summer clinic programs across the US. Nate is also a former member of the visual staff for Music City Drum and Bugle Corps. He is excited to begin his first season teaching at Southwind.
Phillip graduated graduated magna cum laude from the University of North Florida in 2012 with a Bachelors's in Jazz Studies. He has taught wih FMBC State Finalists Allan D. Nease High School, Pace High School, and Choctawhatchee High School, as well as Southwind Drum & Bugle Corps this past season. He also served as the Visual Caption Head/Drill Designer for Ancient City Ensemble, leading them to WGI World Finals appearances in each of their first 2 seasons. He is currently the drill designer for Choctawhatchee High School indoor percussion and is a consultant for many high school and independent percussion ensembles across the country. Phillip’s drum corps experience began in 2008-2009 with Carolina Crown and the Blue Devils in 2010.
Mark Sweat is a resident of Flowood, Mississippi and currently serves as the Assistant Director of Bands at Terry High School and Byram Middle School. Mark has a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education from Jacksonville State University, where he had the opportunity to perform with such groups as the Marching Southerners and the JSU Chamber Winds. In 2012, he began his graduate studies at the University of Mississippi, where he served as a graduate assistant for the Pride of the South Marching Band. He graduated with a Masters in Music Education in 2014 and began teaching in the public schools of north and central MS. Throughout his career, he has had the opportunity to work with marching bands in Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia. This is Mark's first year with Southwind.
Zack is a resident of Jacksonville, AL where he is a student at Jacksonville State University pursuing a degree in Music Education and a marching member of the Marching Southerners. Zach's drum corps experience is with the Spirit of Atlanta Drum and Bugle Corps on mellophone in 2011. This is Zach's first season with Southwind.
Nathan Shuffit is a resident of Gulfport, Mississippi and band director at St. Stanislaus High school in Bay St. Louis, MS. He holds a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education from the University of Southern Mississippi. Nathan's experience in the marching arts includes being a visual instructor for Music City Drum and Bugle Corps, and a marching member of Teal Sound and Spirit of Atlanta Drum and Bugle Corps. This is his second season on the visual staff for Southwind.
