Ryan Jobe is currently completing his student teaching internship at Cleveland High School in Cleveland, MS, and will be graduating from Delta State University with a Bachelor of Music Education degree in December of 2016. During his time at DSU, he studied under Dr. Josh Armstrong and was a member of the DSU Wind Ensemble (principal), Pride of the Delta Marching band (captain), Percussion Ensemble, and Steel Drum Band. Mr. Jobe has directed many high school drumlines in the North Mississippi area. Mr. Jobe was also a member of the 7th Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps in 2013-14 where he marched snare and timpani.
Justin Craft is a resident of Florence, MS and is in the process of finishing his Bachelors Degree in Music Education at Mississippi College. Along with teaching many schools in central Mississippi, he was recently a member of the 2015 Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps as part of the front ensemble. This will be Justin's first year with Southwind.
Elanders Frazier, a resident of Pace, FL, has been reappointed the percussion caption head and will be serving as the battery arranger of Southwind Drum & Bugle Corps for 2017. Elanders is in his 15th year of percussion instruction and musical arrangement for middle and high schools in the Gulf Coast area. His marching performance credits include Eminence Indoor Percussion Ensemble, Spirit of Atlanta Drum and Bugle Corps 2004 and 2005 (serving as a Percussion Captain in ‘05). In 2004, he was also a member of the first place Spirit of Atlanta Drum and Bugle Corps I&E Cymbal Line. He finished his marching career with Music City Mystique from Nashville, TN, in 2006 and 2007. Daniel Cubas is currently the Associate Director of Bands and Percussion Director at Hillcrest High School in Tuscaloosa, AL. He directs Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Percussion Ensemble and assists with the Patriot Marching Band and Wind Ensemble. Previously, he served as a percussion instructor for Kennesaw Mountain High School Marching Band, which was named the Bands of America Grand Nationals 3A champions in 2014. Daniel graduated Cum Laude from Reinhardt University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education. He has performed with groups such as Blue Knights Drum and Bugle Corps in 2013 and Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps in 2014. He is active as a music arranger, clinician, and adjudicator.
Timothy Heath joins Southwind's front ensemble staff for 2017. Tim currently is seeking his EdD in Music Education at the University of Alabama. Currently, he's an assistant professor of music education at Samford University. Tim served as the Front Ensemble Coordinator for Music City Drum Corps, Carolina Gold Drum & Bugle Corps, and an instructor for multiple percussion units and high schools.
Nelson is an educator who has worked with more than twenty scholastic and independent percussion programs in the eastern United States as an instructor, designer, and clinician, including Mill Creek High School, North Cobb High School, West Georgia Independent Percussion, DoubleStop Percussion, and Muscle Shoals High School. He has performed with Spirit of Atlanta Drum and Bugle Corps, Atlanta Quest Indoor Drumline, Atlanta CV Drum and Bugle Corps, and the University of Georgia Redcoat Band. This is Nelson's second year as a member of Southwind's instructional team.
Nathan is resident of Vicksburg, MS, where he is the assistant band director at Warren Central High School. Nathan holds a Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Mississippi. This is Nathan's second year serving on the instructional staff of Southwind. He is a past member of Forté Drum and Bugle Corps.
Corey Winter, a resident of Huntsville, Alabama, will be starting his third year as a bass instructor for Southwind. Corey has been teaching bass drum lines across WGI, BOA, collegiate, and DCI stages for 7 years. He joined the instructional staff for the University of North Alabama Pride of Dixie marching band in 2015, where he was previously the bass drum section leader. Since 2010, he has been on staff with Sparkman Indoor Percussion, the 2016 WGI PSO World Champions.
A.J. Adair, originally from Villa Rica, Georgia, is a senior Music Education Major at Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, AL. Over the past five years, Mr. Adair has performed with the JSU Percussion Ensemble, Steel Drum Band, and Chamber Winds, for which he currently serves as principal percussionist. In addition, he has performed with the world-renowned Jacksonville State University Marching Southerners. While at Jacksonville State, A.J. has served as percussion arranger/instructor for several high schools throughout the southeast including Sonoraville High School, Rome High School, Luella High School, and Fort Payne High School. A.J. began his work as an upper battery technician for the Southwind Drum & Bugle Corps during the 2016 season.
Jeremy has been involved in the marching arts as an instructor and performer for the last 14 years. Jeremy marched three seasons with The Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps as a member of the Front Ensemble from 2004-2006. He was also a member of the Louisiana State University Golden Band from Tigerland Drumline from 2003-2007, spending the 2006 and 2007 seasons as Drum Captain and Arranger. Jeremy spent 2008 as a Graduate Assistant at Auburn University, where he was in charge of the Auburn University Marching Band Front Ensemble. During the 2013 and 2014 Spring semesters, Jeremy was on staff at the University of Texas at San Antonio as an instructor of the Rhythm of San Antonio Indoor Drumline. Currently, Jeremy is on the Music Instructional Team at Violet Crown Independent Percussion Ensemble based of San Marcos, TX.
Derek joins Southwind's percussion staff this year for 2017. He has taught percussion the past 15 years at several high schools and collegiate music programs in Florida and Colorado. He has been a performer with ensembles at Walt Disney World, Tampa Bay Thunder Drum and Bugle Corps, and Rhythm & Blue Drumline. Derek has been an instructor with the Kiwanis Kavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps and Heat Wave Drum & Bugle Corps.
Johnny Hurd is an Instructional Specialist and Band Director at Troup County Comprehensive High School in LaGrange, GA. Johnny has a BA in Music Education from Auburn University and a Masters in Music Education from the University of Georgia. This is Johnny's second year working with Southwind's percussion section.
Garrett Lambert, a resident of Pensacola, FL, is a percussion educator, performer, composer, and arranger. Originally from Tampa, FL, he earned his Bachelor of Music Education degree from the University of West Florida. As an educator, he has worked with several high school percussion programs across Florida, Alabama, and Mississippi. He has performed with various ensembles including the Teal Sound Drum and Bugle Corps, the University of South Florida, and the University of West Florida. Garrett currently arranges and composes for many marching and concert ensembles in Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, and Texas.
James Long is a resident of Houma, LA and music education student at the University of Southern Mississippi. He is an assistant with the Petal and Terry High School Marching Bands in Mississippi. This is his second year with Southwind teaching in the front ensemble. James is former member of the Blue Knights Drum & Bugle Corps and Academy Drum & Bugle Corps
John Gaal, a resident of Greenville, SC, is the 2017 Front Ensemble Supervisor. Receiving his Bachelor of Music in orchestral instrument performance from Bob Jones University, John is an avid performer and instructor in the Southeast. This is John’s second year with Southwind. He currently teaches at Dorman High School in Spartanburg, SC, and Music City Mystique in Nashville, TN. Previously, John was a member of the Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps’ 2013-2015 front ensemble as well as Music City Mystique’s 2015-2016 front ensemble.
Kirstyn Norris, a native of Riley, KS, is excited to be joining the Southwind Drum & Bugle Corps staff for their 2017 season. She has previously participated in both WGI and DCI, spending the last summer touring with Carolina Crown, and performed with the percussion section at PASIC 2016. In the past, she has also competed in WGI with Gateway Indoor Percussion. Kirstyn received her Bachelors of Music in Percussion Performance from Kansas State University and has taught applied percussion, percussion methods, as well as operated her own percussion and piano studio since 2015.
Colin Slavin resides in Pensacola Florida where he is the cymbal instructor at Escambia high school. He has been a cymbal and visual instructor at Escambia since 2012. Colin is also the visual coordinator and Brass instructor at Pensacola high school. Colin also is the cymbal instructor of the Sacremento Mandarins Drum and Bugle Corps. His marching cymbals experience includes the Escambia high school indoor percussion ensemble, the Oregon Crusaders drum and bugle corps, and the Atlanta Quest indoor Drumline. He currently attends the University of West Florida and is a dual music education and trumpet performance major.
Jerry returns as Southwind's cymbal technician for 2017. Jerry is a cymbal instructor for the Florida State Marching Chiefs' Big 8 Drumline. His past cymbal instruction positions have been with Pioneer Drum & Bugle Corps, Solance Independent Percussion, and the Diamonds Indoor Percussion Ensemble. His past marching experience is with Music City Mystique and as a member of the 2007 Southwind Drum & Bugle Corps.
