Greetings, Southwind Family.
By now, most fans of the drum and bugle corps activity are aware that DCI has decided to do an abbreviated, non-competitive season with additional health safeguards in place. The board and staff were all in agreement that we did not believe it was in the best interest of our students and those students’ families to have camps and put Southwind on the road this summer.
However, we did decide that we could undertake a more limited performance opportunity without putting the kids at risk. Lawrence LeClaire (’91) will be disseminating the details very soon. Lawrence works at a medical school, and has access to the latest information on COVID-19 and will be watching the statistics and news carefully as the season approaches so he and the board can make rational, educated decisions about how to proceed using science and the latest data to guide us.
We recently had our annual Empower Youth in the Performing Arts officer elections. The new slate of officers for 2021 is as follows: Chris Goldschmidt (’82) returning as our Secretary, Linda Gooden (’92, ’93, ’94) returning as our Treasurer, Sonya Berrey serving as our new Vice President, and I am returning as President.
While there isn’t any current OWA news to share, there is a project with them that we hope will come to fruition soon, if it can be done in a safe, healthy manner.
The annual DCI Board Consortium is this month, and several of our Board Members, including myself, are going to be attending. Due to the current pandemic, it will be virtual this year. The DCI Board Consortium is a meeting of all of the corps’ boards to share best practices and ideas.
Finally, we have a new method that some people will be able to use to donate to our organization. We now have an account with Benevity, a foundation that helps secure money for non-profits. Many companies that donate or match funds use Benevity to help them distribute donations. Check to see if your company makes donations or match yours. If they do, please consider making Empower Youth in the Performing Arts and our flagship organization, Southwind Drum & Bugle Corps, your beneficiary.
